Amish Observation

I love Christian fiction. But I just don't have as much time to read as I used to....which makes me sad. I try to read at night, but then promptly fall asleep. But I've noticed a new trend and I'm wondering if you've noticed the same thing. Have you seen how many different authors are now writing about the Amish? (These photos don't even touch the surface! Check this out!) I just think it's interesting. I'm not a psychologist, but I'm going to take a stab at the meaning behind this anyway. (Like you thought I wouldn't!?) I'm guessing we're all longing for a simpler time or a simpler way of life. What's your guess?

I agree. I sometimes find myself wondering what my life would be like if I had been born in some other era. Harder labor maybe, but definitely less stress. We recently moved to a small town outside the Dallas metro and I think part of why I like it is that I wish everything could be slow paced like country life is (not that ours is, but it makes me think of it).

I get tired and stressed running from one place to the next just so can get to the next thing on my list. I miss the days when I felt "bored". I can't see that ever happening again in this lifetime!

I died laughing when I read your blog. Just last night, I was on the internet trying to learn more about the Amish--as I have been devouring the Beverly Lewis books!! What timing!

i know that esp. at times i long for the simple(r) life - therefore the new blog title i changed to not very long ago. i am a person who doesn't like to live in the past but i can remeber when i first got married 32 1/2 years ago i had an office job, a meticulously clean house, cooked all of our meals, ironed.... and time to do stuff. had two kiddo's, stayed home had a meticulously clean house and cooked all of our meals.... you can see my point i am sure :) now i have an office job again, our kid's have been raised, i s.t.r.u.g.g.l.e. to just have clean clothes to put on, yard work is always behind, my lists are never finished, cook not so often anymore, we are NEVER home. i used to dream about all the extra time i would have when i wasn't chasing and running through all of our kid's activities.... am i just older and can't get it together anymore, am i too stretched out on my time????? YES - i do long for the simpler times. i want to feel like at the end of the day, I have finished off a good day that God has given me instead of squandering my time away. boy did you ask for a book or a comment? :)

Angela--I've heard how much harder this fast pace is in larger cities. So glad you found a suburb!!

Marcy--lots of people in our church are reading the Wanda Brunstetter books on the Amish. I also recommend Gayle Roper and Mindy Starnes Clark. Not Amish, but another series I highly recommend (if you like suspense and intrigue) is The O'Malley Series by Dee Henderson. LOVE that series!

Tammy--you are right on! It's only getting harder as far as I can see. It's hard to get the gumption to want to cook anymore.

Being in the Conklin Company, Vaughn and I have had the joy of becoming friends with many Amish Mennonites. We have had many opportunities to sit and speak with them about their beleifs vs. ours. Did you know that they refer to themselves as "German Baptists"? We beleive much of the same foundational truths, I simply love my Amish friends. As a matter of fact, when we were in Branson, one of the girls there babysat Destiny for me so I could attend workshops.

Have read the O'Malley series, but will have to check into the other authors you recommended.

I've noticed this too and wondered why is everyone writing about the Amish. I like your reason why. It makes sense.

Kaci--I wish I knew some Amish people! I'd love to visit them.

Hope--thanks for agreeing w/ me. I like you!

Amy--I see you trying and I like what I see! It seems I keep complicating mine.

I have never gotten into Christian fiction. Tried but never liked any and I have tried all of them! Wonder why? I don't usually do "romance" genres though.

Simpler life - love it! Lived in the Philippines for 3 years with no vehicle, no phone, and no tv. It was VERY VERY difficult to get used to but by the end of the first year, I love the simplicity of it all. Afterwards, it was equally difficult to come back stateside and get re-acclimated to having all of the "interruptions"!!!
